Suryavanshi Urges CM Sukhu to Protect Himachal Darshan Photo Gallery Before It’s Too Late
SHIMLA : IRT Bureau
Rajesh Suryavanshi, Chairman of the Society for Human Welfare and Mission Against Corruption, representing a membership base of over 30,000 individuals, has made an urgent appeal to Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to intervene and protect the Himachal Darshan Photo Gallery from imminent demolition.

Located at Bindravani on the Mandi-Kullu National Highway, the Himachal Darshan Photo Gallery was founded on April 24, 1997, by noted photographer and historian Birbal Sharma.
Over the past 28 years, the gallery has served as a living archive of Himachal Pradesh’s cultural heritage, traditions, and forgotten artifacts, attracting more than six lakh visitors, including students from over 200 schools across the state.
Initially displaced in 2016 due to the Kiratpur-Manali four-lane project, the gallery was painstakingly rebuilt and reopened in May 2023. However, it now faces demolition under the Pathankot-Mandi four-lane project. Despite over 550 letters and appeals to various authorities and cultural bodies, no protective action has been taken. Final eviction notices have been issued by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).
A farewell ceremony was held on April 26, 2025, as preparations for the dismantling of the gallery commenced. Founder Birbal Sharma expressed deep sorrow over the closure but highlighted the pride in the gallery’s role in preserving and promoting Himachal’s rich cultural legacy.![]()
Chairman Suryavanshi emphasized the importance of saving the institution, stating,
“Preserving the Himachal Darshan Photo Gallery is not merely about saving a building — it is about safeguarding the cultural soul of Himachal Pradesh. We urge Chief Minister Sukhu to act decisively before it is too late. Future generations deserve to witness and learn from their roots.”
The Society for Human Welfare and Mission Against Corruption, along with cultural enthusiasts, historians, students, and concerned citizens, stands united in this appeal for immediate government intervention to save one of Himachal’s most significant cultural landmarks.
